Realism in Mosaic Art: Color, Composition, and Design

In this online course, Carol Shelkin brings her well known unique and creative style to Mosaic Arts Online. Carol works in an impressionistic style to create a painterly flow to her work. In this course, Carol teaches the techniques needed to create a successful mosaic in realism. This course is taught in a lecture style where you will watch an “over hands view.” Carol is skilled at breaking down this technique so that anyone can do it. Teaching many of the elements of art, Carol shows how to work in light and dark, how to see the different values of colors using a gray scale chart, how to see the shadows in a photographic model, and how to make a line drawing as your “map.” Carol demonstrates how to cut the glass and start her mosaic art piece. This online course is designed to give you ALL the information Carol teaches in her “in person” workshops including her student handout, the photographic model, (in both color and black and white) as well as your own color wheel and gray scale value chart using your own printer.

The advantage of owning this course is the ability to refer to the information as often as you wish. It is always nice to meet and engage with a teacher when taking a course “in person,” but when you own this online course, you will have the ability to watch it as often as you like without distractions. This is one the best methods for learning and practicing this style of mosaic art.

Portraiture in Stained Glass

For the first time, Carol Shelkin is bringing her “Portraiture in Stained Glass Mosaic” course to our online platform. This is the first time you will see Carol create her mosaic portrait for over 50 minutes from an “over hands view” perspective. Carol has never invited the public to watch her work in progress until now. While talking and guiding students through each section, Carol reveals her tips and techniques on creating her unique and painterly-style mosaics. There is a wealth of knowledge in this course no matter what medium of art you work in. Students will learn about color charts, value scales, light and dark tones, as well as highlights and shadows.

Carol will start from the very beginning in a lecture style, and teach students how to create a portrait in this style of mosaic art. She will guide students from the very beginning by defining portraiture in this medium. She will explain how to pick an appropriate photographic model. If this is your first time, she will instruct on practicing with a specific face. Carol will use Albert Einstein’s face as a great beginner model for this course. There are over twenty-five sections of information in this course.

It is highly recommended that students take Carol’s “Realism in Mosaic Art: Color, Composition and Design” before taking this course. “Portraiture in Stained Glass Mosaic” is filled with so much information, and having the foundation skills from Carol’s “Realism” online course will allow students to really benefit and understand all of her techniques. Additionally, if you have attended one of Carol’s in-person live “Realism” workshops, then that will fulfill the requirement.
It takes Carol over 60 hours to finish a portrait like the one in this online course. Carol does not complete this portrait in the course, but she covers all of the areas of facial features to make sure students have the information they need to complete their portrait. Carol recommends that students use a practice model for their first mosaic portrait in stained glass before moving on to a loved one or more specific photographic model. There is a comment section in each segment, and you are welcome to ask Carol questions which will help you move forward in learning this process.

Carol Shelkin, a visual artist is creating contemporary, fine art, original and intricate mosaic designs that eminent care and attention to detail with hand cut, high quality stained glass and other glass materials.
Taking to art as soon as she was able to hold a crayon, she started attending Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia at seven years old. It was made clear at a young age that her life would be centered on her passion for art.
She continued her artistic direction with studies at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and studied under mosaic masters in Ravenna, Italy. Before becoming a full time artist and instructor, she owned a successful arts nursery school/child care program.

Carol accepts week long and weekend workshops, commissions and creates one-of-a-kind works of art that are displayed in galleries, community centers, libraries, commercial and residential settings. She works with the clients to form a partnership to help make their visions into a work of art. She also offers workshops and tours as far as Costa Rica, Mexico, and Spain, to name a few with Worldwide Mosaic Art Workshops and Tours.
Carol received several grants from The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Upper Darby Arts and chosen to receive the prestigious Robin Brett Mosaic Scholarship for continued education from The Society of American Mosaic Artists. She is a Founding Member and past President of The Mosaic Society of Philadelphia.
Carol finds a very eclectic approach to surface design, placing glass where she, as a painter naturally places paint.
